Shantaram is an incredible story about an incredible man. What I love the most is that this book is also based on a true story.
Shantaram takes place in India, after the author, a bank robber and heroin addict, had escaped from prison in Australia and been on the run, leading him to Bombay.
This book will take you on a journey through India and Afghanistan, a journey that is so well described that you will feel that you were there. You feel every emotion, fear, love and pain as if it were happening to you. I haven’t read another book that has taken me so deeply into the story. This really was a book that I couldn’t put down. Some of the story is so very beautiful and touching, other parts are difficult to read, during his time in prison I felt every bit of his agony.
There is so much I can tell you about this book but I really don’t want to spoil the story for you. I would love to hear your comments once you’ve read it and discuss which parts were your favorites. I read it after a friend had recommended it to me. They hadn’t told me what it was about, just that it was a book that I had to read. They were right. Reading Shantaram certainly puts a lot of things in life into perspective.
It is a long story, however, once you start you will be surprised how quickly you finish it. I didn’t want it to end, in fact, I’ve even started reading it a second time!
I urge you to find the time to read Shantaram because I am sure that no matter what type of book you usually read, this will be a story that you never forget.
